A Cliche, But Very Good Fantasy Film

I’m not the biggest fan of fantasy/adventure movies but this new D&D movie is absolutely fantastic. It had all the common fantasy film tropes included and the cliche message of “EVEN THOUGH THEY DIDN’T GET WHAT THEY WANTED, IT’S THE JOURNEY THAT COUNTS!” This movie revolves around a group of thieves who try to rescue their daughter and (hopefully) resurrect a former friend with the help of a friendly sorcerer.

I’ve actually never played Dungeons & Dragons before but after viewing this movie, I’ll definitely consider doing so. Even if you’re not a fan of D&D, you’ll probably enjoy this movie, mostly because it has a good plot and compelling characters. The other movie I saw this month was, The Super Mario Bros. Movie…… which I was more excited for but ended up liking this movie a little more. So, if I had to recommend a movie for anyone to see this April, it’d be “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves.”

The special effects in this movie were marvelous, but I think it could’ve worked a little better if they added some practical effects in there too. I obviously expected the effects to be CGI because that’s just how most movies are these days but that aggravated me slightly because I firmly believe movies no longer feel like movies if every little effect is computer-animated… it’s better when they look less realistic because it gives off a sort-of-vintage-vibe. I tried to think of more complaints and flaws this film presented, but I really couldn’t. other than the over-the-top special effects, it was fine! Now, the plot delivered huge doses of fantasy-lore which elicited me to mentally ask, “When can you have too much fantasy? And did this film already have too much of it?” I eventually came to the conclusion that, it doesn’t matter how much fantasy-action you include, audiences will eat it up as long as it’s there!

I really didn’t care about the characters in this movie. Compared to LOTR and The Hobbit, they were completely one-dimensional… but I didn’t mind that because the film's main attraction wasn’t the characters, it was the journey they went on and everything that happened along the way.

Overall, it was a really good movie that I think D&D fans of all ages will enjoy. In conclusion, was it unnecessary to make a D&D movie, yes it was! But it was really, really, really good and much more than a cash-grab!

Overall, I’d rate “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves,” 9-out-of-10
